Adverse posession

Do you own a property you don’t visit regularly? My jaw dropped one day in an environmental law course when I heard about adverse possession for the first time. It turns out that if your neighbor has been using your property without your permission or knowledge, he could own it after a period of 10 years. There are different statutes with different rules that apply to each. If you own such a property, make sure you have a survey and know where the corners are located. Inspect the property regularly to make sure your neighbors aren’t encroaching on your land or taking their family and friends for Sunday strolls on it. (The issue is greatly oversimplified here; please consult an attorney if you have any questions.)
